Our San Antonio office volunteered at a local food bank and jointly prepared 921 boxes (27,630 pounds) of food alongside 75 other volunteers. Way to go, team! The San Antonio Food Bank serves 16 counties in southwest Texas by providing food for those in need, as well as hosting assistance and education programs to support self-sufficiency in the future. Over 58,000 individuals are served each week, including children, seniors, the working poor, single parents, veterans, and the homeless.
Everyone enjoyed this humbling and rewarding event and plans are underway to return on a quarterly basis.
On Saturday, November 2nd, employees from the Northville, MI office gathered at Gleaners Food Bank’s Warren Distribution Center to volunteer their afternoon assisting the organization with their food allocation efforts. Gleaners Food Bank, founded and headquartered in Detroit, MI, distributes over 95,000 meals to those in need every day. Gleaners serves as a link between soup kitchens and those in need by soliciting surplus food, storing and repackaging it safely and then distributing it to agencies that are the direct providers to the hungry.

BB&E held another successful volunteer day at Food Gatherers in Ann Arbor, MI, contributing to the mission of alleviating hunger in Washtenaw County. BB&E staff, family, and friends sorted through fresh produce donated by local businesses and farms. All overripe, damaged, or moldy produce was separated and composted; surplus storage boxes were recycled; and a bounty of fresh, ready-to-eat produce was boxed for distribution to nearby non-profit agencies. Ultimately, 1 ton was salvaged! We’re proud to have a small part in supporting this food rescue program, as well as its principles of efficiency, sustainability, and compassion. More information can be found at https://www.foodgatherers.org. We were so busy sorting food, we don’t have any pictures of the process, but here is our star cleanup crew!
On October 14, 2017, BB&E lent a hand to the good folks at Food Gatherers in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We were amazed at how much food is donated both by organizations and individuals, and learned about the important work that Food Gatherers has been doing as the first food rescue program in Michigan. Our team work involved sorting produce into boxes for delivery early the next week, and culminated in a thorough tidying up of the work room. It was truly a team effort and valuable time spent!
